LET’S PRAY FOR OUR PRIESTS
The Emmanuel Community invites you to join us in praying regularly for the men who serve us as priests. Our Priests and trainee priests are very special men, who have given up their lives to be as much like Christ as possible. One of the consequences of their decision is that they give up the opportunity of having a family so that they can be fully available to the Lord and to us. It is up to us lay people to look after them, without getting in the way of their vocation. This means praying for them and treating them as though they are part of our extended family.
The vocation of priesthood has always been tough and potentially lonely. In our present society, things are even tougher. As fellow-Christians, we should always be ready to support one another, and prayer is always the best way to start. If you would like to join us in praying for our priests – or praying for your priest, feel free to pray in the way which means most to you. However we pray, we are responding to the call of the Holy Spirit. And not only the Holy Spirit. Our priests and bishops frequently ask us to pray for them, as does Pope Francis.
Prayer of any type, at any time is valuable but we would like to offer a format which gives some structure and a sense of unity to what we are doing. We suggest that you find a regular 5 or 10 minute opportunity to visit the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament.
There is a wonderful holiness and intensity about being in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. You are directly in the Lord’s presence and there is nothing to get in the way. It is not necessary to spend a long time in prayer, though you may want to. Quality is definitely better than quantity. Many people rely on regular time with the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament in order to manage their busy extended family and professional lives. Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament might be one of the Catholic Church’s best kept secrets but it is increasingly popular and you can find local churches with a wide variety of times to suit you. 10 minutes during your lunch break or on the way home from work would add immeasurably to the quality of your day.
We are providing Prayer for Priests prayer cards which include a suggested simple prayer, an icon and our email address.
